Studio Rules

Red Clay Ceramic Test Tiles

To our clients.

As you will appreciate working with clay can be messy and when working with machines there are inherent risks involved in the operation of any machine such as a pottery wheel and the attendant tools. One of our priorities is therefore to ensure the safety, comfort and well-being of all of those using the pottery studio. Accordingly, we ask you to adhere to a few simple rules that are intended to ensure the comfort, safety and convenience of all of those using the studio.

  • Please listen to your instructor at all times.
  • Please do not handle other people’s work without their express permission. If you break something, please leave a note with the piece.
  • Please do not enter the kiln room unless otherwise given explicit permission to.
  • When throwing on the wheel, please turn it off when not in use.
  • When using red clay please use a red-only canvas or wooden board while wedging, rolling slabs and working on the canvas tables. The red clay stains easily and that can transfer onto other people’s work.
  • When glazing, please clean all of the glaze off of the bottom of your piece. Even if you wax the bottom, please still wipe off any beads of glaze that may remain on the bottom.
  • Please clean up after yourself, so that other students have the opportunity to work with clean tools and tidy surfaces.
  • Please ensure that you use the correct reclaim buckets when reclaiming clay scraps. Please do not mix different clay scraps as this may contaminate the respective reclaim bucket.
  • Please note that unclaimed work may be thrown away at the studio’s discretion after a period of six months.
  • If in doubt about any of the above rules, please clarify with your instructor.

Finally, we must point out that we reserve the right, in our absolute discretion, to terminate any course or session that has been entered upon by a client in the event that we believe their behaviour falls outside these rules or that they pose a hazard to themselves or others either in respect of safety or the general convenience, cleanliness and ambience of the pottery studio.

In such exceptional circumstances we will refund any monies already paid in respect of access to the studio, lessons yet to be taken or courses yet to be completed. We reserve our position absolutely in respect of the admission of individuals to the studio or to classes either for individual work or for participation in courses.

Sorry for the specific legal language but we hope that in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, a cheerful ambience and proper adherence to basic and appropriate safety procedures the studio can be an enjoyable, comfortable and artistically productive space for all.
